Alcatraz 2015

Some of our Explorers took part in a 24 hour expedition. The aim of this expedition was to walk from point “A” to “B” without being caught by “catchers”. Catchers were in cars who drove around trying to find groups of explorers. The Explorers settled down in the night-time in bivvy bags and got caught only 2 times and came second in the competition.

Three explorers joined the district for a week away in Scotland. They spent their time up in the Cairngorms doing various activities like ice climbing, staying in a bothy and practising their mountaineering skills up in the cold mountains. They stayed in Nethy House where they were provided with beds and food. Minibuses took them out to various location where they usually spent a day with qualified mountaineering leaders up in the mountains. One explorer said their highlight was “making new friends and experiencing ice climbing for the first time”.

Can you fit and explorer in a box..yes you can!!!

Can you fit and explorer in a box..yes you can!!!

A brilliant time was had by all whilst raising funds for the unit, and both money/awareness for the charity ShelterBox which supports disaster areas around the world.  After some expert planning they set off around Liverpool city centre with their trusty big green box, answering questions and conquering challenges as they went!  From counting window at the Liver building (there are lots!) and guessing flags, to relays with sandbags, they did it all!!  and even managed to get back on time!!

We did also learn some important lessons (1) an excellent map reader is always useful (Andrew!), (2) good timing is vital when dodging water spouts (Elliot!), and you can fit an Explorer in a big green box (Sam!!).

Bouldering and Games Console Night!

Nomads ormskirk explorers

At our last two meetings we spent one evening in Liverpool bouldering and the other playing on games consoles.

Our trip to Liverpool was organised and ran by Mayo who ‘expertly’ taught the Nomads Explorers how to climb and boulder. After much trial and error, we finished with a race. The quickest time being Joe with a 6.3 second climb to touch the highest point.

Our games console night consisted of hotly contested Nintendo Wii battles and a Call of Duty marathon!
